Dr. John Gardner Johnston, Teen Health Connection's founding Medical Director and Charlotte pediatrician, is known for his efforts to empower every adolescent to be healthy, safe and successful. Throughout his career, Dr. Johnston has dedicated his time to improving the lives of his patients and to community child advocacy.
Barbara Ziegler demonstrated outstanding commitment and capability in her efforts to improve adolescent health as the Founding Executive Director for Teen Health Connection. Barbara advocated for adolescents through position statements and conversations with local, state and national politicians and through her service on various local and state committees and boards.
The Johnston Ziegler Youth Leadership Award is a merit-based scholarship that recognizes a local high-school senior who, like Dr. Johnston and Barbara Ziegler, has demonstrated outstanding leadership, advocacy or service for adolescents. The selected youth will receive a $1,000 educational scholarship to the college or university of his or her choice. The recipient of the scholarship will also appear in a video that will be shown at Teen Health Connection events and on the Teen Health Connection website.
All high school seniors in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region were invited to apply for the Johnston Ziegler Youth Scholarship. The Teen Advisory Board selected the 2017 recipient, Julia Ferrante, a South Mecklenburg High School Senior Scholar for her academic success and commitment to community service. Applications will open October 1, 2017 for the 2018 award. All high school seniors are invited and encouraged to apply.
Congratulations to Julia Ferrante, South Mecklenburg High School Senior and the 2017 recipient of The Johnston Ziegler Youth Leadership Award.
